Help Refugees in the Middle East

The past couple of years have seen a surge in the number of refugees fleeing for their lives from the unrest in Syria and Iraq.

As the crisis drags on, the situation is getting more desperate for children and families. Families are running out of savings and struggling to meet their basic needs of food, shelter and warm clothing. Many families can no longer afford to send their children to school, and often risk dangerous migration seeking opportunities to survive. Without further action, we risk losing a generation to unemployment, poverty, lack of education and hopelessness.

World Vision has been working with these refugees, providing emergency relief items and much needed winter clothing. Hygiene and baby kits were among the emergency items distributed. As of June 2016, World Vision’s Syria Crisis Response had helped close to 825,000 beneficiaries, and continues to help many more in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Our assistance extends to the following sectors:

HEALTHCARE – Distribution of hygiene and baby kits, rehabilitation of mobile clinics, and provision of necessary materials to these clinics.
WASH – Distribution of water in mobile tanks, and installation of emergency water points and latrines
FOOD – Distribution of food ration e-cards to affected households, and commencement of school feeding programmes
EDUCATION – Setting up of Child Friendly Spaces and Temporary Learning Centres.

Mosul: More than 73000 people, including families and children, have already fled the city (UNHCR, 2016). As one of the first agencies to start supporting children at a new camp just 25km from Mosul, World Vision is preparing to help this influx of refugees with child-friendly spaces and mobile health clinics amongst various interventions.

This year, World Vision is also expanding its work to the Berm, Jordan’s desert frontier, where there are up to 100,000 Syrian refugees trapped in what is known to be an “arid, dusty, no-man’s land” with dreadful living conditions and no access to basic necessities.

World Vision is now reaching out to thousands of children and families who have been evacuated from Eastern Aleppo to areas where World Vision can reach them. Conditions in these temporary shelters are difficult, with the onset of winter leaving children freezing and hungry. This 'crisis within a crisis' has left an astounding number of people in cramped living conditions and at constant risk of violence. World Vision will be distributing relief items like blankets, mattresses, hygiene kits and heaters to help these families survive winter.

As World Vision continues to respond to needs arising from the crises in the Middle East, your gift will help us bring hope to children and families fighting for survival.
