Ethiopia Bachoo School Project

from Education

by Faith Chua

A group of sponsors visited Yaya Gulele ADP from 16-21 Dec 2019. A visit to one of the schools, left a deep impression - The Mana Barumsa Bachoo school is attended by over 400 children. Built using very basic materials such as mud, hay and sticks and poorly furnished with dilapidated tables and benches, the school is a far cry from what is known as a conducive environment for studying. Despite the conditions, the students’ passion for education warms our hearts and spurs us to create this crowdfunding page.

There is a pressing need to:

1. construct a new school with bigger and better classrooms

2. equip the school with necessary furniture and fixtures

3. provide training to academic and leadership staff

...so that more children in the community can attend school in a conducive learning environment and the quality of education can be improved.

Mana Barumsa Bachoo school situated in Yaya Gulele district, North Shewa Zone of the Oromia state.

One out of the two school buildings is constructed out of mud and sticks. We were told the building could collapse during the rainy season.

Little to no sunlight and ventilation makes studying difficult for the children.

How You Can Help:

Click on “DONATE NOW”

Your gift of love, in whichever way and amount, can enhance the learning environment for these children in need, and empower more who would be able to have an education towards a brighter future.

In addition to a one-off donation, you may also consider sponsoring a child from Ethiopia (Yaya Gulele) today! By sponsoring a child, you give the gift of life’s basic needs – specifically food, clean water, healthcare, economic opportunities and education – to him/her so that he/she can overcome poverty for good!

“We often wonder how much of a difference we can actually make in a world where needs seem never-ending, and while it is true that nobody can help everybody, everybody can help somebody.”

Background Information:

World Vision Singapore has been funding Yaya Gulele ADP since its inception in 2007. Working in tandem with national governmental policies and other agencies for the eradication of poverty and transformational development in Ethiopia, the child sponsorship programme seeks to help families in the target areas achieve livelihood security on a sustainable basis.

Ethiopia ranks 173 out of 189 countries on the 2018 Human Development Index. The average household income is US$100 per month and 34.7% of the population live below the poverty line. A majority of the population are farmers engaged in mixed cultivation and livestock rearing.

In Yaya Gulele ADP, more than 50% of children have not gained functional literacy. Inadequate school facilities, materials and insufficient access to updated teaching methodologies contribute to students reading, writing and numeracy skills not being at par with the required standards. Because of the difficulties in attaining quality education, about 1 in 10 children prefer income generating activities like farming instead of going to school.
